ACA Memorial

BCK-IBI Group has been awarded the design of the American Civic Association Memorial park. The park will be located a few blocks north of the site where those memorialized were killed on April 3, 2009. The design of the ACA Memorial Park flows directly from the wishes and ideas of the victim’s families.

The central monument is a broken granite column, a symbol of a life cut short, set in a circular bed of dwarf evergreens. On its base will be mounted thirteen plaques giving the names of victims and communicating to the visitor something about them and their individual stories. Out of the stone column rises a nine-sided column of heavy cast glass, lit from within. On each of the nine sides is engraved a word or phrase of peace in each of the nine different native languages of the victims.

A circular area of brick pavers surrounds the central broken column and ornamental steel benches face the monument, which are backed by a circular plant bed containing evergreens and disease-resistant shrub roses.

Thirteen abstract sculptures of birds, like a startled flock just taking flight, are set around the plant bed. The birds are held 14 feet in the air on slender metal tubing, which carries an enclosed fiber optic line to light each bird, making them visible floating in the air at night, and sparkling through the trees when viewed from the River Promenade on the opposite bank of the Chenango River in winter.
